Bishop floor lamp
Built with a boat-building technique called cold-molding, this sassafras floor lamp brings together art, design, and building technology into a one-of-a-kind work.
How It's Made
Cold-molding is a boatbuilding technique in which thin layers of wood veneer are laminated over a shaped form to create strong, lightweight structures. In my work, I use the process to create sculptural wooden lighting with continuous curves and distinctive surfaces that would be difficult to achieve through traditional woodworking. Learned while assisting Martin Puryear, the technique allows me to explore the relationship between material, form, and light.
