More about the Artist
Artist Statement
Mellin Studio works primarily in domestic hardwoods — oak, cherry, and maple — chosen for stability, grain character, and how they change with use. Each board is selected and oriented to highlight natural variation, so the structure of the material becomes part of the design rather than something concealed. The studio relies on traditional joinery and hand-guided machining to balance precision with responsiveness. Dimensions are adjusted during the build, allowing the proportions of a piece to emerge from the wood itself. Inspiration comes from early American utility furniture and workshop fixtures — forms developed through necessity — translated into pieces suited for contemporary interiors.
